Probiotics Shorten Diarrhea Eposides

Researchers in Wales have released a study showing that probiotics can shorten the time you suffer with a stomach flu. Well, with diarrhea anyway.

In a review of 63 trials, Swansea University found that giving probiotics along with liquids for rehydration cut about a day of suffering off a bout of the “runs.” They also found that the risk of the illness lasting over 4 days was cut by 59%.

And it’s more than just relief for your tummy that’s at stake.

Diarrhea kills over 2 million people in developing countries each year, most of them young children. Probiotics could potentially save some of those lives.

For us here in America, diarrhoea is generally just a very unpleasant temporary illness. OK, “unpleasant” is an understatement. A natural, healthy way of shortening the illness would of course always be welcome.

Professor Steve Allen of Swansea’s School of Medicine said,  “The beneficial effect was consistent and significant across many different types of trials.” However he added that more research needed to be done into which particular strains of bacteria would produce the benefit.

Which is, of course, always the issue with probiotic supplements. New strains are added on nearly a weekly basis, and only a few have stood up over time and been fully researched by independent researchers with no vested interest in the results.
