Calcium Supplements and Fractures

Mother and daughter

Does taking a calcium supplement really make a difference? Or is it one of those things that are kind of like basic liability car insurance – most never use it so it’s OK to get the basic version, as long as you’re covered?

Well, turns out calcium supplements are a whole different kind of insurance policy. More like an investment, actually.

Researchers wanted to know whether taking calcium supplements actually reduced fractures, so they analyzed 29 studies from around the world. They found that people over 50 who take calcium supplements, or calcium and vitamin D supplements, have fewer fractures.

They also found that people that consistently took their supplements reduced their risk of fractures by 24%.

The article also mentions a comment by one of the researchers – Dr. Benjamin Tang – that I really like. “Dr Tang likens calcium supplements to superannuation payments where small regular contributions build to much larger pay off years down the track.” It struck me as kind of a 401(k) plan for your health.
