Hey, how many of you believe that osteoporosis is a woman’s disease – raise your hand?
Wait, I’m still counting. 😉 Just kidding, you can put your hands down. I’m asking because I was looking through the National Osteoporosis Foundation site and came across this great section about men and osteoporosis.
Here are some interesting points from the site:
• Two million men have osteoporosis
• Once over age 50, one in four men will break bones because of osteoporosis
• For men over 50, it’s more common to break a bone because of osteoporosis than to get prostate cancer
• About 80,000 men a year break a hip, and men are more likely to die within a year of breaking a hip
The one that really gets me is that breaking a bone is more common for men than prostate cancer. Think about it – how often have you heard warnings about men and prostate issues? Now how often have you heard about osteoporosis and men?
Now I do understand that women get osteoporosis more often than men. But it sounds to me like this is an important issue for men too.
So men, stop thinking of osteoporosis as a “woman’s disease” and start preparing now! Be sure to get plenty of exercise, vitamin D and calcium.
Find out more about the calcium supplement we recommend that includes vitamin D.
