So there are a lot of myths out there about osteoporosis. Here are five of the top myths about osteoporosis. How many of them have you fallen for?

Myth: Only women are at risk for osteoporosis.
Researchers have found that the one in five men are affected by osteoporosis. It’s also been estimated that for men over 50 the lifetime risk of a fracture from osteoporosis is one in three.

Myth: Only old people are at risk.
Osteoporosis can develop at any age. It does become more common as we age because all of us lose bone density as we age.

Myth: I’ll know if I have osteoporosis.
It’s often called a “silent disease” because there usually aren’t any outward signs. Usually the first time you’ll find out that you have it is after breaking a bone.

Myth: Osteoporosis just means I might break a bone, and a broken bone isn’t really serious.
Broken bones are painful, and can take a long time to heal. For example, out of 300,000 hip fractures in a year, 6 months later less than 15% of patients were able to walk unaided.

Myth: Any calcium supplement is safe and effective for preventing osteoporosis.
In the last few years, researchers have found that certain forms of calcium can lead to an increased risk of heart attacks and kidney stones. The safer, more effective forms of calcium are the forms that can be absorbed the best.
