How Widespread is Vitamin D Deficiency?


A team of doctors from the McGill University Health Centre in Canada concluded that an estimation of 59% of the population as a whole were deficient in Vitamin D. They stated “Most people also do not consume enough vitamin D-rich food to obtain adequate amounts of it.” You could overcome this lack of Vitamin D intake through the use of supplementation easily.

How many of us can honestly say that we believe our exposure to the sun is enough to produce enough Vitamin D to stay healthy? Given that an increasing amount of people work in office jobs, or at least indoors, it’s a fact that most people are deficient in Vitamin D without supplementation.

There has recently been a decline in peoples levels of Vitamin D. “We were anticipating that there would be some decline in overall vitamin D levels, but the magnitude of the decline in a relatively short time period was surprising,” says a study co-author Adit Ginde, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. Some 10 percent of U.S. adults are vitamin D deficient, according to a study published in November in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Research that has been undertaken in America has findings that almost 75% of African American adults have insufficient levels of Vitamin D. A shocking statistic from the Investigators at Harvard Medical School now estimate that around 90% of all black children may be deficient in Vitamin D. Although both white and black can easily be affected from lack in Vitamin D, black skinned people have higher melanin (pigment) content within their skin cells. Higher levels of melanin allow greater protection from UV rays, but this also reduces the ability of the body to produce sufficient amounts of Vitamin D. Many doctors also recommend supplementation due to the reduced ability to produce the vitamin through sunlight.

Data gathered from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in America found that 50.8 million children were thought to have insufficient levels of vitamin D. This is a worrying statistic considering the health problems related to deficiency of vitamin D. The statistic is very likely to carry through to the adult population. The easiest and simplest way to reduce the risk of these associated health problems is through supplementation.

We know Vitamin D deficiency is a leading cause of so many medical conditions, but also a leading cause of depression. Given that the estimated figure for those people suffering from depression worldwide is an astonishing 121million, it’s easy to see how widespread the effects of deficiency in Vitamin D could possibly be.

Deficiency in Vitamin D has also been correlated with cancer. 1 in 3 people of likely to develop some form of cancer within their lifetime. Medical studies have previously shown that on average a total of 74% of patients had Vitamin D concentrations that were considered as either deficient of suboptimal (below average) This again demonstrates how widespread Vitamin D deficiency may possibly be given that cancer is likely to affect 1 in every 3 people.
