Astaxanthin and Diabetes

Astaxanthin is a potent antioxidant that has been used extensively in Japan and other countries for eye fatigue, skin conditions, and muscle endurance, and it is gaining more of a following these days in the United States as well. We recently came across a remarkable animal study involving the antioxidant and diabetes. Scientists started treatment of Astaxanthin in this study on the subjects at 6 weeks of age. The effects of the antioxidant were evaluated at 10, 14, and 18 weeks.  In this study, Astaxanthin displayed very positive healing results, according to the scientists!

 

 

The Results Matter!

This study shows that Astaxanthins antioxidant powers,  reportedly  500 times stronger than vitamin E, have the ability to safeguard cells against the oxidative damage caused by high glucose levels. Blood sugar levels and oxidative stress are associated with complications common among diabetics, as well as kidney disease, nerve damage, and vision problems.

The non-fasting blood glucose level in the test subjects that weren’t given Astaxanthin was significantly higher than that of the ones that were treated with Astaxanthin. The results also indicated that Astaxanthin significantly increased levels in blood plasma, and lowered liver and kidney weights as well.  Glucose toxicity was reduced, and kidney cell function was preserved.
