How Is Krill Oil Extracted?

open air extraction

Before you make a decision on a krill oil supplement, you want to find out about the extraction process used by the supplier you’re considering.

Because how your krill oil is extracted does make a difference in so many ways. From the actual nutrient count, to freshness and potential for oxydation – extraction matters.

Solvent Based Extraction Methods

Most manufacturers today use some form of solvent based extraction. In simple terms, solvent based extraction uses a liquid or chemical of some kind – in this case, often hexane – to separate oil from the krill themselves. Once the chemical solvent is added, the solid bits of krill are filtered out.

The amount of the solvent left in the oil depends on the filtration method. But in general, once a foreign substance is added it’s nearly impossible to get every trace of it back out.

We’ve seen some manufacturers tout a “supercritical solvent extraction.” This is a slightly more complex process that involves using heat and pressure to get the solvent to it’s “critical point.” The critical point is a thermodynamics term that means the liquid in a state where it can be both a liquid and a vapor at the same time.

Confused yet?

The bottom line is this: Solvent based extraction methods unavoidably add a foreign substance to your krill oil that must then be removed. How thoroughly they’re removed will vary, but at minimum there will be traces of solvent in your krill oil supplement. And supercritical solvent methods also involve heat and pressure, which increase the risk of oxydation.

Non-Solvent, At-Sea Processing

In the last 2-3 years, a new process has emerged for extracting krill oil at sea.

With this method, krill are harvested using vacuum pumps that deliver the krill directly to the extraction equipment on board the ship, so the oil is extracted within minutes of capture.

Instead of chemicals or solvents, the krill are taken through a process that ends with mechanical pressing to extract a higher grade of krill oil.

This method is faster – there is no wait time between harvest and extraction. It’s cleaner – no solvents or foreign substances are ever added to the krill. And it delivers an oil that in some cases has even higher amounts of critical nutrients.

What Happens After Extraction?

As Krill Oil has grown in popularity, we’ve seen a disturbing trend towards mass production. Many popular products have made some unsettling adjustments as the need for more and more output placed demands on their processes.

In many cases this has led to extraction methods that use chemical solvents, as mentioned above. Worse, it’s led to giant warehouses where extracted oil waits for months at a time in metal drums to be encapsulated.

These methods and wait times have added even more steps to the process as manufacturers have to further manipulate the products to achieve even the basic label numbers mentioned above.

But there is a better way, and we believe it’s the solvent-free method mentioned above.

Our Recommendation: Captain’s Krill Oil™

Captain’s Krill Oil comes at the process from the opposite angle to those popular brands. They believe that fresher, purer, unaltered krill oil will meet nutrient numbers naturally.

In the beginning, they marketed the product on freshness and purity alone. They don’t list nutrient numbers on the label. But since so many have asked, they’ve recently begun testing Captain’s for nutrient breakdown, and can now definitively say that their small-batch processing leads to not only the freshest, purest krill oil on the market, but also delivers the nutrient numbers you want to see:

What Is Captains Krill Oil?

CaptainsKrill-med

So what is this new product we’re recommending?

It’s called Captains Krill Oil, and it’s got a very interesting story. You see, most krill oil is harvested in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica. Most of the time, the krill are either frozen and shipped to be processed, or the oil is extracted on ship and then shipped elsewhere to be encapsulated and bottled.

Either way, you’re looking at a lot of time sitting around in drums. A lot of images like this (from an actual wholesale distributor website):

bulk krill

Why Captains Is Different

The difference with Captains Krill Oil is that the krill oil never sees the inside of a drum.

“The Captain” harvests the krill, using safe, eco-friendly methods that eliminate unwanted marine life in the catch. This is fairly standard. But then it gets interesting.

Instead of extracting the oil and shipping it off to sit for who-knows-how-long in drums somewhere, The Captain has a small manufacturing facility right on his ship. The oil is encapsulated and bottled right there where it was caught.

It’s processed in small batches and the finished product sent straight to retailers. So the wholesale distributor above never sees it.

And that saves a lot of money.

All in all, we’re pretty excited about Captains. We hope you’ll check it out at the following retailers:

The End of Black Label Krill Oil

krill oil 2

Apparently, all good things must come to an end.

The manufacturer of Black Label Krill Oil has decided to discontinue it’s production. It seems that the formula is more expensive to produce than pure krill oil, and their profits are not as high with this product.

At present, supplies are running very low. It won’t be long before the last production run is completely sold out. Prices are rising even now to reflect this lack of supply.

We’ve searched for another product with a similar formula but came up empty. So, we decided to go in a different direction.

Over the years the one main complaint we’ve gotten regarding Black Label has been the additives. Not just the added astaxanthin, but the manufacturer took fatty acid molecules from fish and added them to the krill oil to increase the amounts of EPA and DHA.

With that in mind, we searched for a pure krill oil with absolutely no additives of any kind. And one that was fresh and sustainably harvested. And we’ve discovered quite a treasure.

Captains Krill Oil is a tiny company just like us. In fact, the entire operation happens on ship. Captains ships are fitted with small manufacturing facilities – facilities fully inspected and registered by the proper authorities – so that the product is harvested, extracted, encapsulated and bottled all within hours.

Then it’s sold directly to select retailers – skipping a couple layers of distribution “middle men” that add several dollars to the final price of each bottle. So this krill oil is actually a good bit lower in cost than any we’ve recommended before.

Omega 3’s: Key To The Fountain

Omega3sForKrillOil

The explorers had the fresh, lush green forest encircling them on every side. The rays of the sun shined all the way through the thick treetops above and birds chirped in the distance, seemingly taking the adventurers down the overgrown trail. The front person was Sir Alexander Dewight, and he noticed an opening within the brush up ahead and told the other people to follow behind him. He carried a shotgun for defense with him inside one hand, and inside the opposite hand he held a map so worn out, the smallest amount of wind might make it rip apart. Dangers may be just around any bend, even though the forest looked so beautiful.

“From what I’m observing on the map,” he said, his deep Britain accent easily noticeable, “we ought to be over it.” He moved his head from one side to the next while searching for some kind of entrance to a hidden lair. “It must be around here someplace!”

“What if this entire thing is a ruse Sir Dewight? You know, for thousands of years people have been attempting to locate this place.” It was Henry’s voice unmistakably, the young trainee the university had forced Dewight to take along with him on the expedition.

His face became really serious and it lost all emotion. Dewight focused on Henry when he turned around, elevating his face so his hat’s brim was not covering his serious and darkish eyes.

“My dear boy, you can’t just assume that something doesn’t exist because it has never been found. Look at the researchers that created penicillin or the Wright Brothers when they provided us the gift of flight. It’s not that far from us. Make no mistake. I really feel it. Eventually you’ll start feeling it also and we can give the world everlasting life. The Fountain of Youth is true, Henry-,” as Dewight chatted, his eyeballs expanded wider and wider, “and you are sitting on it!”

Each day, a tiny amount of fear deep down within my soul expands louder and stronger. Every minute that goes by, we all know is a minute nearer to our very own ending. It is the incredible tragedy for being mortal. For years researchers have been looking for anything that will improve the quality of life as we know it and extend it as well. It’s a chance that they have discovered a huge piece of the puzzle.

The culprit is cellular aging. Omega-3’s have proven that they might be the solution. The University of Southern Australia’s researchers performed a study with 33 adults to discover what impacts omega-3’s had on the process. A group took the health supplement for 6 months, the other didn’t. Their results were certainly amazing, showing there might be a very significant relation between consuming omega-3’s and reducing the cellular aging procedure.

Another HUGE sign that the good guys were omega 3’s, stems from an analysis executed by the Division of Cardiology based in San Francisco General Hospital, which tried to look at the association between heart disease and the fatty acids. Compared to the individuals who didn’t take omega 3’s over the next 5 years (once getting the disease) those who did take them were in a lot better shape. Even though the research workers acknowledge, they don’t yet completely understand the connection (they suspected omega-3’s slowed down a procedure referred to as telomeric aging) they really believed that fatty acid was affiliated with far better overall cardiovascular health.

Everybody wants their Fountain of Youth. We’re all worried on some degree of reaching the “end of the road.” But mother nature has a crazy way of giving us indicators (and the tools) to increase our life spans. Omega 3’s may be the water out of the fountain.

Rag-Tag Research Geek Recommendation

Krill Oil has been found to be one of the best sources of Omega-3 fatty acids. We recommend the anti-inflammatory powerhouse Black Label Krill Oil™ which contains 300mg of Omega-3.

Is it just me or does it seem like everyone you know has jumped on the Omega-3 bandwagon? If you have noticed this trend then you are in good company, my friend. Omega-3 fatty acids are recommended by doctors all of the time, for just about everything. That’s largely due to the powerful anti-inflammatory effects Omega-3s provide.

Red Whale Krill Oil Gets A New Name

The end of Red Whale Krill Oil

From the beginning, it seemed to be a bit too confusing.

The idea behind the name “Red Whale” Krill oil was just a bit too clever. Blue whales are the largest mammal on earth, and they eat krill. But since this krill oil has extra astaxanthin (the ingredient in algae that gives salmon and flamingos their distinctive color).. any whale that ate this krill would turn red.

When we started recommending Red Whale Krill Oil it made sense to us. But Over the last couple years we’ve gotten dozens of questions from customers wondering what whales have to do with this product. Does it come from whales? Why red ones?

Then the search engines started flagging sites that sold the product. The automated “bots” that scan web content saw “whale” and “oil” in the same sentence and assumed the product was illegally selling whale oil. Not cool.

For the record, there has NEVER been any whale content in this product. It’s always been 100% krill oil blend, plus some added astaxanthin from algae.

Finally, the manufacturer was convinced that this name was a bad idea. It may have been great marketing (its definitely something people remember) but it had to change. And now it has.

Introducing Black Label Krill Oil™

Black Label Krill OilThe new name seems to us to be a better description of the product. “Black Label” is often the premium version of a product. That certainly applies to this krill oil, which takes the highest quality krill oil (with a full 42% phospholipid content) and adds extra astaxanthin for maximum potency.

Can Omega-3s Slow The Aging Process?

Omega-3 Sources - Boost! Brain Health - aProvenYou.com

In what researchers are calling “exciting new research”, omega-3s may not just help you stay healthier but may literally help you live longer. According to researchers at the University of California San Francisco, omega-3 supplements help balance out the ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in the body. This balance helps lower stress and inflammation which may slow the immune system cells aging process.

Your cells have chromosomes. On the end of those chromosomes are parts called “telomeres” which are there to protect the chromosome from becoming damaged or fusing with another chromosome (which causes cancer). Cells are always aging and replicating. With every time that cells replicate, the telomeres get shorter, your cells are less protected, and your body ages.

What the  study has found is that supplementing your diet with omega-3s helps lower your oxidative stress and inflammation, two factors that strongly impact those telomeres by balancing the omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in your body. By significantly lowering levels of oxidative stress and inflammation, the telomeres are less affected and stay longer. Thus, omega-3s may have yet another added benefit, slowing cell aging.

What researchers found most exciting was the omega-3 supplementation did not simply prevent telomere decay but actually helped increase telomere length in the cells in just a four month period. Other studies had found this to be the case over much longer trials and another previous study had found omega-3 supplements to slow  down the cell aging process in people who suffer from heart disease.

Although more research remains to be done, these  findings suggest that if you aren’t already taking omega-3 supplements for their countless benefits, you should definitely start if you want to try to slow down the aging process (who doesn’t?) and lower inflammation in your body.

The Product Formerly Known As Red _____ Krill Oil

MarineMammal

The folks over at Google have the best of intentions. Like most rational people, they are opposed to the slaughter of certain marine mammals. (You know.. like Moby Dick.)

Because of this, G makes it a point to flag any site offering what might be products derived from those marine mammals, such as any kind of oil or blubber. Which is a great and noble thing to do, right?

Absolutely. Unless, of course, that policing is done exclusively by computers and not by actual human beings. Because computers can’t tell that a KRILL oil product named after a red marine mammal that doesn’t exist in real life is, in fact.. Krill oil. Not Marine Mammal oil, of the red or blue or any other color variety.

Where’d That Name Come From, Anyway?

On occasion we’ve gotten questions about where the name came from to start with. Apparently it is a bit confusing for some.

The Blue W&*#!$ is the largest mammal. And it lives exclusively on Krill. Krill eat astaxanthin, and of course there is extra astaxanthin in Red _____ Krill Oil. Astaxanthin is what gives salmon and flamingos their reddish orange color.

So the theory goes, if a Blue ____ ate THIS krill oil he’d turn red. Hey, SOMEBODY thought it was clever. Maybe too clever, who knows.

A Bit TOO Clever

Because of this, Google has taken issue with our site. And several others that either offer or speak of Red ___ Krill Oil. It all boils down to the “W” word. Seems you just can’t use that word if you’re talking about any kind of oil. It’s just too close for comfort.

We could fight them on this. We could go through their review process and get an actual human being to look us over and determine that we are NOT advocating the slaughter of marine mammals or the sale of their oil.

But in a couple weeks another “googlebot” is going to flag us again and we’ll have to start the process all over. So, if we want people to be able to find us on today’s internet, we have to pretty much do what the Big G wants done.

This is why, from now on, the product formerly known as Red W*&#! Krill Oil will be known as, well, Red _____ Krill Oil.

And, so everyone knows: No Marine Mammals Were Harmed During The Production Of This Product.

Carry on. 🙂

Krill Oil Shows Weight Benefits

krill oil 2

We often talk about krill oil as a potent source of Omega-3s to benefit your heart but new research shows that krill oil also has substantial benefits for people with obesity related disorders.

Chief among them, according to a study by Aker BioMarine, shows that krill oil was able to suppress fat accumulation and prevented weight gain when given to rats on a high fat diet.  The study, performed at the University of Salento in Italy, used rats on low fat and high fat diets to see how krill oil would affect their metabolism.
