How Is Krill Oil Extracted?

open air extraction

Before you make a decision on a krill oil supplement, you want to find out about the extraction process used by the supplier you’re considering.

Because how your krill oil is extracted does make a difference in so many ways. From the actual nutrient count, to freshness and potential for oxydation – extraction matters.

Solvent Based Extraction Methods

Most manufacturers today use some form of solvent based extraction. In simple terms, solvent based extraction uses a liquid or chemical of some kind – in this case, often hexane – to separate oil from the krill themselves. Once the chemical solvent is added, the solid bits of krill are filtered out.

The amount of the solvent left in the oil depends on the filtration method. But in general, once a foreign substance is added it’s nearly impossible to get every trace of it back out.

We’ve seen some manufacturers tout a “supercritical solvent extraction.” This is a slightly more complex process that involves using heat and pressure to get the solvent to it’s “critical point.” The critical point is a thermodynamics term that means the liquid in a state where it can be both a liquid and a vapor at the same time.

Confused yet?

The bottom line is this: Solvent based extraction methods unavoidably add a foreign substance to your krill oil that must then be removed. How thoroughly they’re removed will vary, but at minimum there will be traces of solvent in your krill oil supplement. And supercritical solvent methods also involve heat and pressure, which increase the risk of oxydation.

Non-Solvent, At-Sea Processing

In the last 2-3 years, a new process has emerged for extracting krill oil at sea.

With this method, krill are harvested using vacuum pumps that deliver the krill directly to the extraction equipment on board the ship, so the oil is extracted within minutes of capture.

Instead of chemicals or solvents, the krill are taken through a process that ends with mechanical pressing to extract a higher grade of krill oil.

This method is faster – there is no wait time between harvest and extraction. It’s cleaner – no solvents or foreign substances are ever added to the krill. And it delivers an oil that in some cases has even higher amounts of critical nutrients.

What Happens After Extraction?

As Krill Oil has grown in popularity, we’ve seen a disturbing trend towards mass production. Many popular products have made some unsettling adjustments as the need for more and more output placed demands on their processes.

In many cases this has led to extraction methods that use chemical solvents, as mentioned above. Worse, it’s led to giant warehouses where extracted oil waits for months at a time in metal drums to be encapsulated.

These methods and wait times have added even more steps to the process as manufacturers have to further manipulate the products to achieve even the basic label numbers mentioned above.

But there is a better way, and we believe it’s the solvent-free method mentioned above.

Our Recommendation: Captain’s Krill Oil™

Captain’s Krill Oil comes at the process from the opposite angle to those popular brands. They believe that fresher, purer, unaltered krill oil will meet nutrient numbers naturally.

In the beginning, they marketed the product on freshness and purity alone. They don’t list nutrient numbers on the label. But since so many have asked, they’ve recently begun testing Captain’s for nutrient breakdown, and can now definitively say that their small-batch processing leads to not only the freshest, purest krill oil on the market, but also delivers the nutrient numbers you want to see:

What Is Captains Krill Oil?

CaptainsKrill-med

So what is this new product we’re recommending?

It’s called Captains Krill Oil, and it’s got a very interesting story. You see, most krill oil is harvested in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica. Most of the time, the krill are either frozen and shipped to be processed, or the oil is extracted on ship and then shipped elsewhere to be encapsulated and bottled.

Either way, you’re looking at a lot of time sitting around in drums. A lot of images like this (from an actual wholesale distributor website):

bulk krill

Why Captains Is Different

The difference with Captains Krill Oil is that the krill oil never sees the inside of a drum.

“The Captain” harvests the krill, using safe, eco-friendly methods that eliminate unwanted marine life in the catch. This is fairly standard. But then it gets interesting.

Instead of extracting the oil and shipping it off to sit for who-knows-how-long in drums somewhere, The Captain has a small manufacturing facility right on his ship. The oil is encapsulated and bottled right there where it was caught.

It’s processed in small batches and the finished product sent straight to retailers. So the wholesale distributor above never sees it.

And that saves a lot of money.

All in all, we’re pretty excited about Captains. We hope you’ll check it out at the following retailers:

The End of Black Label Krill Oil

krill oil 2

Apparently, all good things must come to an end.

The manufacturer of Black Label Krill Oil has decided to discontinue it’s production. It seems that the formula is more expensive to produce than pure krill oil, and their profits are not as high with this product.

At present, supplies are running very low. It won’t be long before the last production run is completely sold out. Prices are rising even now to reflect this lack of supply.

We’ve searched for another product with a similar formula but came up empty. So, we decided to go in a different direction.

Over the years the one main complaint we’ve gotten regarding Black Label has been the additives. Not just the added astaxanthin, but the manufacturer took fatty acid molecules from fish and added them to the krill oil to increase the amounts of EPA and DHA.

With that in mind, we searched for a pure krill oil with absolutely no additives of any kind. And one that was fresh and sustainably harvested. And we’ve discovered quite a treasure.

Captains Krill Oil is a tiny company just like us. In fact, the entire operation happens on ship. Captains ships are fitted with small manufacturing facilities – facilities fully inspected and registered by the proper authorities – so that the product is harvested, extracted, encapsulated and bottled all within hours.

Then it’s sold directly to select retailers – skipping a couple layers of distribution “middle men” that add several dollars to the final price of each bottle. So this krill oil is actually a good bit lower in cost than any we’ve recommended before.

The 5 Reasons Women Over 40
Can’t Lose Weight
– And What To Do About Them

Losing Weight Doesn't Have To Be This Hard

The moment I looked at my daughter’s graduation pictures, I knew something had to change. It was all I could do to keep from crying. Did I really look THAT fat? (Yes. I really did.)

But the feeling that settled over me that moment wasn’t one of determination. It was more like hopeless despair. Because I hadn’t just ignored the weight I’d gained over the last several years. I’d done and tried everything to get it off – and nothing worked. Diet after diet, walking, aerobics, gym membership. All came and went, and the scale still refused to budge. I just could not understand why the things that used to work when I was younger had no impact now.

Sound familiar?

Turns out there are 5 very good reasons the scale stops cooperating after you turn 40:

1. Your metabolism slows down. Your body is shifting gears away from potentially getting pregnant. It’s estimated that if your diet and activity level stays exactly the same as in your 30’s you’ll suddenly have about a 100 calorie a day surplus. Which means that you’ll gain 8 to 10 pounds every year without doing anything differently than before. Worse, the slowdown continues as you get older – so the calorie surplus and the amount of weight it causes you to gain only continue to grow as the years go by.

2. You lose muscle mass. Apparently it takes more muscle to be ready to reproduce. So after 40 your muscles literally start to slowly melt away. And since muscle burns more calories even at rest than fat, your metabolism slows even further.

3. Your hormones begin to change. We don’t want to think about that dreaded M word (menopause) but your body can start to prepare for it up to 10 years before you begin to notice the symptoms. Hormones like leptin and ghrelin (which regulate appetite), adiponectin (which regulates fat storage and energy levels) are produced at different levels than before – all causing your body to hold onto energy, store more fat, and tell you to eat more.

4. Your serotonin levels decline. Have you noticed you’re sleeping less? It’s not your imagination. Unfortunately, your body does its most efficient fat burning while you’re asleep, while it’s making repairs and adjustments based on what has happened during the day. So less sleep means – you guessed it – less fat burning.

5. You’re under more stress. Our 40’s and 50’s are the most stressful decades of our lives. Teenagers (or the “empty nest”), marital issues or divorce, career pressure, aging parents, retirement planning, health problems… all this stress leads to a hormone called cortisol. Studies show elevated levels of cortisol stimulates your appetite and causes you to crave sugary or starchy foods. It then causes this extra energy to be stored as abdominal fat.

So yes, your body really IS working against you. So how do you fight back?

The 5 Things You Have To Do
To Lose Weight Over 40

Your body has changed, partly due to your age and partly due to the weight. If you want to fight the fat, you’ve got to work with your new body instead of against it. It’s not going to be easy – there are no easy victories in the Battle of the Bulge. But victories can be won, and they are oh so sweet. Here’s how to start fighting back:

1. Throw away your scale. Part of what’s gotten us into this mess is that we’ve lost muscle mass. We’re going to have to build some of that muscle back – and muscle weighs more than fat. So it’s likely that you can radically shift your body composition to a leaner, fit physique – and yet you may not lose a single pound. You may even gain a few in the beginning. Seeing that reflected on your scale will do nothing but discourage you. So just don’t. Instead, get a tape measure and keep track of the inches you’re losing.

After all, what’s more important – looking fit and healthy (and actually being so) or getting to an arbitrary number on your scale?

2. Build some muscle. Not big bulging bodybuilder muscles (unless you like and want that look) but you do need to build up your lean muscle mass. This is why just walking or aerobics isn’t as effective for you now as it used to be when you were younger. Get yourself some resistance bands or some light wrist and ankle weights. You don’t have to pump iron, but you do have to make your muscles work to make them grow.

3. Eat more. You heard me. The problem with most of the diets you may have tried is that if you consume too FEW calories, your body goes into “starvation mode” and lowers your metabolism even further. So don’t let that happen. Of course, what you eat matters – this isn’t permission to pig out. Stick with lean proteins and lots of fruits and veggies, and try to eat 6 small meals a day so you never feel hungry or deprived. (Protein also helps with rebuilding your muscle mass – a double benefit!)

4. Take care of yourself. You’re not doing anybody any favors by not taking time for you. Do something every day – whether it be a walk in the sunshine, meditation, a soak in the tub – something to center yourself and de-stress. And while you’re at it, be sure you’re getting the sleep you need. Whether you need a change in routine, a melatonin supplement or help from your doctor, adequate sleep is a must.

5. Get some help. The simple fact is we need a boost when it comes to dealing with the hormonal changes that are making it harder to lose weight. Over the last several years, the media has buzzed over half a dozen different “miracle” supplements. Many have some good, solid science behind their ability to influence the very hormones that are causing us problems.

But none of them work for everyone. Because every body is different, every woman has different hormone levels and different ways her body holds on to fat. The good news is there’s a very good – downright excellent – chance that one of them (or a combination of a couple) WILL work for you. It’s just a matter of finding out which one, and getting a version that’s got the quality to be effective.

So how do you figure out which supplements are most likely to help YOU? Well, you could spend hundreds of dollars trying them all. Or, you could save the time, money and frustration and fill out our short evaluation. It’s 100% free, no purchase required – and once you’ve completed it not only will the results give you some guidance but you’ll also get a nice discount should you choose to try the recommendations.

Facebook Censorship Can Happen To You

Mouths_of_Babes

Jess is a single mother of 3, including a 7-year-old with autism. Right now, she’s scrambling to pay her bills and feed her children. And she isn’t alone. We had to let 7 great people go last month (that was half our staff).

Why?  Because Facebook has banned us. We can’t advertise, we can’t link to our website – in fact, no one can, even you can’t link to our website within your posts.

And Facebook won’t tell us why?

If you think that this is something that won’t affect you, think again.

It Can Happen To Anyone

Heather Walker faced every new mother’s worst nightmare: Her son Grayson was born with anencephaly, a fatal condition that leaves a baby born without various parts of the brain and skull. She was prepared for this, and had a professional photographer on hand to document Grayson’s few precious hours of life.

But when she shared those pictures on Facebook, her entire account was banned. The new Big Brother didn’t approve of them.

Marilyn McKenna is the wife of former Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna. All she did was post a victorious pic of herself standing in one leg of a pair of pants she wore before losing 120 pounds. Still she, too, was banned from Facebook. Big Brother doesn’t like big weight loss.

Maybe that’s why Rag Tag Health wound up in their cross-hairs, maybe not. Whatever the reason, its time we all push back together.

Do you really want Facebook deciding what you can and can’t see?

Tell Big Brother To Back Off

Big Brother Facebook needs to be told to end censorship NOW. This isn’t China, or the old Soviet Union.  This is America. An America that has been through the economic ringer over the last several years. And in a time when every job counts, we can’t afford to let arbitrary censorship keep people out of work.

Will you help us bring Jess and the others back?

Visit this link to write Facebook now: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/268228883256323 Choose “pages” from the dropdown menu.

Tell them to un-ban RagTagHealth.com. We are an honest business with happy clients and those clients deserve the right to connect with us there.

And you deserve the freedom to link and post however you want. Don’t wait until Big Brother doesn’t like one of your posts. Lets end Facebook censorship today!

How Does Garcinia Cambogia Work?

Garcinia cambogia is a fruit that looks something like a pumpkin. It’s used commonly in cooking and traditional remedies.

The Western part of society is just now finding out about this all-natural extract – and people flew into a frenzy trying to find Garcinia Cambogia supplements when one famous TV doctor called it “the Holy Grail”.

“Garcinia is an exceptionally effective fat buster,” says Dr. Rich Scheckenbach, a research scientist. “It inhibits the production of fat in the body… and when the body isn’t making fat, it’s burning fat.”

One study from Japan showed that over 12 weeks, garcinia cambogia “significantly reduced visceral, subcutaneous, and total fat areas.” (Visceral fat is around your organs; subcutaneous is ‘superficial’ fat right beneath the skin, like below your arms.)

Garcinia Cambogia works in two ways: First, it suppresses your appetite so you eat less Then, it blocks the formation of new fat. The important thing to remember is it’s not the garcinia itself that has this action, it’s the hydroxycitic acid (HCA) it contains.1

HCA suppresses your appetite through an increase in the hormone serotonin. Serotonin is an important hormone that regulates mood and sleep. By increasing serotonin levels the HCA in Garcinia Cambogia helps stop emotional eating by improving your mood and suppressing your drive to react to stress by eating.

No wonder Dr. Oz referred to it as, “The holy grail of weight loss!”

What Did Dr. Oz
REALLY Say?

Don’t be fooled by websites that try to twist the Dr’s words to fit their product.

1- He never endorses ANY specific brand.

2- Look for a minimum of 50% or more HCA. In a recent update on his website, he says that adding potassium does seem to be more effective.

3- Take no more than 3,000 mg per day and do not accept any fillers or added ingredients.

Red Whale Krill Oil Gets A New Name

The end of Red Whale Krill Oil

From the beginning, it seemed to be a bit too confusing.

The idea behind the name “Red Whale” Krill oil was just a bit too clever. Blue whales are the largest mammal on earth, and they eat krill. But since this krill oil has extra astaxanthin (the ingredient in algae that gives salmon and flamingos their distinctive color).. any whale that ate this krill would turn red.

When we started recommending Red Whale Krill Oil it made sense to us. But Over the last couple years we’ve gotten dozens of questions from customers wondering what whales have to do with this product. Does it come from whales? Why red ones?

Then the search engines started flagging sites that sold the product. The automated “bots” that scan web content saw “whale” and “oil” in the same sentence and assumed the product was illegally selling whale oil. Not cool.

For the record, there has NEVER been any whale content in this product. It’s always been 100% krill oil blend, plus some added astaxanthin from algae.

Finally, the manufacturer was convinced that this name was a bad idea. It may have been great marketing (its definitely something people remember) but it had to change. And now it has.

Introducing Black Label Krill Oil™

Black Label Krill OilThe new name seems to us to be a better description of the product. “Black Label” is often the premium version of a product. That certainly applies to this krill oil, which takes the highest quality krill oil (with a full 42% phospholipid content) and adds extra astaxanthin for maximum potency.

Black Label Krill Oil™ is available all the same places you’ve come to know and trust:

Why Being Happy Makes You More Successful

There is so much to glean in this video from Ted.com! Our happiness is not determined by our circumstances, or our success, or any external situation. Rather, its in how our brain processes these situations. We can choose to be happy.

Of course it sounds simplistic – in reality there’s no happiness switch you can flip. It does take work. But as you’ll see, being happy pays some big dividends!

Embrace The Shake

What limits you? Is it a busy schedule, a physical issue, or even a mental hangup?

In this inspiring TED video, Phil Hansen shows us how embracing what we think is a limitation could actually be the key to unlocking our creativity.

What will it mean for you to “embrace the shake?” Tell us in the comments below!
